16 Feb – Go NORTH

Struck out on our own from Kona airport, leaving V&M to drive back to their place and enjoy a week of guestlessness.

Flew via Honolulu up to Lihue, on the island of KAUA’I ( rhymes with HAWAAI, more or less). Strapline: The Garden Isle. Otherwise known as : The Wettest Place on Earth. And there is a major depression heading in …. ( Cue Marvin voiceI think you ought to know..” ).

But – as we landed …it was DRY. Yaaaay.

Picked up our rental car, drove north to PRINCEVILLE , found the holiday apartment Lianne had booked. Saw a lovely sunset as we arrived

Fir trees AND palm trees ?!

All was going smoothly and we were feeling optimistic that we could get into the Haena state park early tomorrow for a hike to a dramatic waterfall before the weather deteriorated. Car access is very limited , but we had booked a shuttle service to take us there. ( As they say – hike Haena, and you’re laughing ).

Then at 7pm we saw an email from the State Park department.

Kauai North Shore Shuttle service has been suspended for ALL departure times tomorrow Friday, Feburary 17, 2023 due to safety concerns prompted by heavy rain, thunderstorms and risk of flooding.

Gaaah ! Marilyn, this is what happens when we don’t have you to organise us.

Have to have another think tomorrow.

Improvise Adapt. Improve !

  1. Ugh! Ok, try to hitch hike!! Stick your thumb out and hope for a ride. It’s the old Hawaiian way of travel.

Or, if the weather really does stink as bad as forecast, enjoy the pounding rain as only the warmth of a tropical storm can deliver. Splash in mud puddles near your condo instead of splashing in mud puddles on a slippery precipitous trail high above the pounding surf. Remember, “pali” means cliff, and your plan was to go to the Na pali coast.
