It was very wet all day – we were reduced to seeking out CULTURE . But don’t worry, none of it rubbed off.
After 3 hours at the Hofburg Museum , we were deeply familiar with the Habsburg family features ( the study of chinetics ), from Maximilian I (1459-1519) to Maria Theresa (1717-1780).
Their one time imperial palace is rammed full of tasteful portraits, suits of armour, frescoes, opulent furniture, and Interesting Facts – such as the info that Maria T produced 16 sprogs, and named 9 of them…. Maria.
Which I suppose is one answer to the famous Austrian question –
“How do you solve a problem like Maria ?”
“By multiplication”
I suppose she thought she was being totally radical when the last daughter was named MariE ( Marie Antoinette, in fact, and that didn’t end well).

On another floor there was an entire exhibition crying out to be titled ” The Life of Brian Max“.

It charted Maximilian’s astonishing rise, from being born son of the Holy Roman Emperor to… becoming Holy Roman Emperor himself. They seemed to think this required superhuman abilities :

He married Mary, for her huge …. tracts of land , ( Burgundy).
There was even a display of medieval animations, apparently by Terry Gilliam-
