Hungerburg’s Alm ? Go !

Press for action

The end-of-the-line bus stop of HUNGERBURG is also the start point for  several walks up the mountain range of Nordkette.

We found a route taking in 3 mountain huts ( Alms ) , and then whizzing back down by cable car, which seemed a good way to spend a wet Friday .

First stage was damp but not unpleasant, up stony tracks through the forest to reach the first Alm ( Arzler), just a mile or two out from Hungerburg.

Innsbruck dimly visible below

The next stage took an hour and a half , and by the time we arrived at Alm 2 ( Höttinger) , we were drenched. Luckily we were greeted by a glorious panoramic view which made the 600m ascent all worthwhile

Breathtaking

It was too wet to eat our sandwiches outside, there was no other shelter, so we felt obliged to buy a lunch inside the Alm.

Kaspressknödell – Intrigued ?

That’s it – a clear broth with a whopping big herb and cheese dumpling in it – a local speciality. And actually, damn good fuel for this kind of a day.

The Plan is Under Review

We had by this stage worked out that the cable car down from the top was not covered by our guest pass and would be rather pricey, plus the fact that zero visibility rather removed the benefit of getting any higher, plus we were kind of soaked and there was another 2 hours of walking required.  Up steep slopes.

Option 2 was to leg it back down and get a hot shower at Max’s – clearly the wimp’s way out.

So back down we went – but not before I’d climbed an extra 10 minutes to get to the 1500m mark, just to make a pointless point .  There were 3 huge white snails on the path there , which was probably a Sign.

Supposed to brighten up tomorrow 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
