Dolo-MITES , not Dolo-Definitely- AREs

Call me unobservant, but up till now I had not spotted that our campsite is not actually in the Dolomites. In fact it is proving very hard to locate a map that clearly shows what that definition and boundaries are : it seems to be a subset of the “Southern Limestone Alps” in northern Italy, possibly a set of separate national parks with distinct names  … Possibly a geologist’s trade secret. Possibly a marketing scam.

But the area round Cortina definitely seems to count, so we headed there on Thursday .  And there are indeed some stunning views, with much more pointy / ragged outlines than Swiss / Austrian  Alpine views .

We followed a track up Dürrenstein , setting off early to try and beat the heat. Sort of this pink area –

Pretty warm to be hiking even at 0930, and we were glad of some tree shade most of the way up.

If you ever want to feel small, climb a mountain

Spectacular views of Monte Cristallo to our south ( identified by using this cunning app)

Views as we climbed up from the parking spot :

We had intended just to head back down from the Alm at the top, but discovering a broad plateau there ( Prato Piazza ) , we walked further on something like flat paths with stunning views on all sides

Nearly 10 miles hiking,  667m climbed , in 29 degree heat – I think we are starting to get a bit fitter 💪🏻🙏🏻🥵
