To-oo Kokee, kokee, kokee ..
Left the cosy apartment in PRINCEVILLE which had been our rain-shelter since we arrived. Time now to Brave The Great Outdooors… We drove clockwise round the island on route 50 (what else ?) to get to WAIMEA CANYON . This ludicrously scenic drive winds up from the south coast to Kokee State Park

… Knees bend, arms stretch …
Various look out points along the way to get out and stretch the limbs on short trails and take pics of the canyon. It was getting noticeably more overcast as we climbed … And very damp

It drove home the impression that Kauai is a very different landscape from the Big Island. Here, there is very little bare rock – and what there is has generally been eroded into sandy, muddy areas. Otherwise, virtually every surface, even if nearly vertical, is covered in greenery and mature trees . Big Island, conversely, is all about the raw lava. The geological explanation is that KAUA’I is millions of years older, but I tend to the view that the Big Island is just Well Hard.

Ra ! Ra !! Ra !!!

We went back up again at sunset … And discovered that being too high ( above most of the clouds) doesn’t make for a classic sunset , but you do get some nice lighting

You put your whole self in
After all that excitement , bedtime came early – and considering the probability of storms, we wimped out of the tent option again.

We had a camping permit for the Kokee campground, so just parked up there and enjoyed the dark skies ( less so the disgusting WC facilities – a rat raced out to greet me as I went in ). But leaving that aside, plus a panic moment when I thought I’d lost my phone, all went well. The car boot with seats flat was just long enough to fit people up to 5’10” ( sorry, Paul )
Errr, anyone brought a pillow ?

I suppose if I put my head between the front seats, I’d be OK. Lovely scenery again
