Around Pahoa

Friday and Saturday were both spent exploring the local area by bike , in preparation for the planned Volcano Ascent ( see next week’s exciting episode) .

But before that, MJ did allow us a little relaxation time – we walked to Kehena Black Sand beach for a dip .

Tracy Island ( ok, looking west from Kehena)

Kehena beach (accessible by death defying leap from lava in foreground)

Waves are pretty aggressive , so we got detailed instructions on how to enter and leave the water safely… But it was gorgeous once in. Met various of MJs local friends there, who told us that a tiger shark had been spotted there a couple of weeks earlier 🫣, and that humpbacks often migrate past it🥹. We saw none of them. But we did see an unnerving sign on the way down …

Anyway – to the recurring theme of our blog –

They just bulldozed through this lava flow and rebuilt the road.
No way round this one

Then you find other , slippier, obstacles This was known as Mango 🥭 Road – a step up from the ‘leaves on the line’ excuse

Finally we came to the point where the lava flows having wrecked the road, ran through a state park area and disgorged lava straight into the sea, causing months of plumes of steam, and destroying the best local coral …

Edge of the lava flow

Somehow, ferns are starting to get a toe hold in this unpromising ground
