Back to the Big I

Thursday 23 Feb

Hilo, Hilo, it’s back to avoid work we go…

Checked out reluctantly from the Shed – getting a cheerful farewell from French family and German surfer boy. Having time to kill, we took a roundabout drive through the interior to the airport – saw strange fir tree plantations, and chanced upon Wailua Falls, where we were serenaded by a local gospel choir.

Do pointy pine trees really belong next to coconut palms ?

A nice lunch stop at Lydgate Beach – when the sun even popped out to give us a positive final impression of the island

We reckon some of that driftwood started in Oregon / Washington

And then flying back to Big Island, via a stop in Honolulu. Chance for some aerial photography :

Diamond Head crater, east of Waikiki beach on Oahu
Sunset over Moloka’i Island, between Oahu and Big Island

Very grateful to be collected (again) from Hilo airport by Van & MJ who drove us ‘home’, fed us , had a laugh over dinner, and welcomed us back to a real house, hot showers, cold beer, cups of YORKSHIRE TEA ☕🫖…and lulled to sleep by the sound of a million coquis….
