Castle in the Sky ( Haut-Koenigsbourg)

Haut-Koenigsbourg castle - with vista over the Rhein valley towards Black Forest

Spent our anniversary (aaaah !) on a cultural excursion. H-K castle is an ancient fort on a high peak south of Strasbourg, beautifully restored under the sponsorship of Kaiser Wilhelm II at the start of the 20th century. He intended it as a show of his strength on his western border. The refurb succeeded brilliantly, but he timed the investment badly ; 10 years after completion, the whole area was handed over to the French as part of the post-war settlements. ( Has the HS2 business plan considered such risks ?). It is a stunning building, and the technical challenges (digging a 62m well to get water, heaving blocks of stone up to the top of a mountain ..) are well- documented on information boards – I don’t generally go in for castle visits, but this was 2 hours well spent.
