Cadières de Brandis – the limestone peaks, French-style

Ok, we’ve had 3 goes at the gorges ( by car, foot and water), so on Tuesday it was time to head in a different direction.

Cadières de Brandis is translated by Google as “brandis caddies” , if you were wondering. I still am.

The extent of our planning was that we knew there were some nice rock formations at the top. Early on, we walked on logging trails and got open views down towards Castellane.

“Le Roc” behind Castellane looks titchy in this context

Then there is a mass of yellow broom as you get higher ..

And once on the top,  when you would think you were getting above the tree-line, it’s like walking through a leafy glade, with long distance views …

Not what I expected at the peak

But eventually you find the best bit – what is referred to in the route plan  at top of this entry as Le Menhir ( Obelix might have struggled to lift this one, mind you ). It’s a really dramatic wall of limestone perched on top of the peak  – I’m sure it must have featured in some movies ??

It’s huge ! Scale somewhat lost in this pic

Guess what ? That gorge is even visible from HERE
Yes, it’s the Gorge again ( behind the Gorgeous, obvs)

The way down was more of a scramble than a walk and included a squeeze reminiscent of The Cheese Press near Ingleton ( scary flashbacks to potholing adventures, Dazzo?)

Cheese press – above ground this time

A grand day out, in short.

( and in shorts. We are still managing to avoid the rainclouds that seem to be covering most of France and the Alps. Which makes it tricky to work out where to head next ... )

  1. Thanks for mentioning the dreaded cheese press – I now wake every night in a cold sweat. Amazing place you discovered though.

    1. Hey, I was the one who would have been trapped behind you, unable to escape until you had wasted away. It’s not all about you, you, you.
