Friday 20th – and we’ve been off to sample the joys of what I promise is actually called Harder Kulm – a precipitous rock promontory ( yep, another one), on the north side of Interlaken. It’s only an 8 minute ride up the funicular from Interlaken, but there’s a good deal of queuing involved, so you really get your money’s worth .
At the top we try a circular walk, but it turns out to be entirely tree covered, with no views at all – except for where they have cunningly sited the restaurant.
It’s ou first meal out this holiday – so blow the expense / saturated fat / vegan restrictions, we’re going to enjoy the view. While several wedding parties jostle for glamour shots around us (but not OF us).
And I found a good strong local brew to beat the food into submission – “Harder” beer (so called because it will start a fight with anything it sees looking at it in a funny way, even in your digestive tract. )
At 6:30pm, the stage is set for the big event : an authentic Alpenhorn duo. Expectations are high. The crowd is hushed…..
It’s an amazing setting, but when they blow their first, tentative, raspberry burps, it sounds like the Year 4 recorder group entry at a hastily-organised school concert. 10 minutes of that cultural education, and we’re queuing for the train back down.
Yes, we’ll have fun, fun, fun-icular till their Daddy takes the tube blokes away.
