Exploring in the rain

Tuesday was spent underground, overground, and wombling damp.

Taking the Lava Tube

Lots of interesting facts about molten rock follow – starting with how channels of lava can form a tunnel as it cools from the top down and then drains (see info board pic). We walked through one which was about 3m high, imagining red hot rock flowing through it. (Perhaps the only way Leeds is likely to get an underground system).

Ranger Steve’s Watery Walk to Mauna Ulu

After lunch, we enjoyed the most entertaining 3 hours I have ever spent while getting drenched in a torrential downpour – a guided walk to the crater of Mauna Ulu, learning about the nuances of lava formation , local flora, and Hawaiian mythology. Laced with appalling Dad jokes ( sample : why is the O’hia tree so named ? ) .

(O’Hia answer : because it’s o’er he-ere, not o’er there). O’De-ar.
