3 nights and 2 marvellous days checking out Mauna Lina bay, on NW coast of Big Island.
Marilyn, with characteristic diligence and foresight, had booked a very nice apartment for the 4 of us just a 15 min stroll from a brilliant snorkeling beach

Don’t have any actual pics of the snorkeling, what with it being underwater, but it was great. Water warm enough for a wimp like me to stay in for an hour with no wetsuit, and the most amazing variety of fish all in shallow water. The coral reef was sadly bleached white near the beach, but as you swim out it looks healthier. At one point I found a “bait ball” – thousands of small silver fish ( scad) doing synchronised swimming – and I could actually swim through them. (If interested in what else we saw , take a look at the Wildlife page). Shark and barracuda had recently been seen there, but they didn’t come out to play with us. We came here both mornings – a real highlight of the trip so far.

Petroglyphs
A short cycle ride up the coast , we found signs for a set of rock carvings, which sounded intriguing.

Stormy Whale Watching
On our final evening here we thought it would be good to try whale spotting. Clouds were gathering as a major low pressure zone swept in from the east…..
