Weekend with Van & MJ

Friday 24-Sunday 26

Three days to relax with our friends before we start the journey home. Nothing major, just took time to chat, help a bit round the house, saw some of their local friends ( who are very interesting – and happy to share great views, pool tables, and art creations ) . Also took some gentle exercise

Baseball cap AND a helmet. You can’t be too safe.

Lianne and MJ did however go on a 30mile bike ride to spot the upper reaches of the latest (2018) lava flows. Starting from the Lava Tree park ….

Lava tree! Formed, as you might guess, when lava flows round a, err, …. tree

Van and I took the restful version, by car .

Where a more recent lava flow has carved a river bed through an older one …. Bizarre
Weirdly iridescent lava from 2018 flow

And then stopped off to see vents up the hill, which are still producing hot steam

Steaming lava vents !
Some of the hardier native vegetation can even survive on these vents

Back at home, I honed my coconut harvesting / opening skills.

Completely coco-nuts

And we took a walk down to the local Kehena beach

Embracing her inner liana ( see what I did there ?)
Stone lined jungle trail known as the Kings Path – previously linking settlements across the island, now a shortcut home from the closest beach
Dramatic waves at the local Kehena beach .. a bit wild for swimming today

And finally a last evening chatting about Life, the Universe and Everything. It has been wonderful to see them again, and we have greatly appreciated their company, care, conversation and catering 😊. Going to be odd to leave.

  1. Thank you for your fabulous blog, both of you. Very inspiring trip, especially when you pushed on through the rain and mud to find those spectacular views through the breaks in the clouds. Lovely to share those treasured moments with you, even from a great distance and looking forward to hearing more on your return. Love S&Bx
