We took a lovely cycle path along the river Mark, heading up from Lianne’s sisters place in Meerle (BE) to the city of Breda (NL).

Plenty of interesting birdlife showed up ( grebes, Canada geese, heron, stork …) .
Then we passed a road bridge named after an area which shows the very LOCAL origins of Lianne’s family : -” Verdaasdonk ” having started out a few centuries ago as ‘van Daesdonc‘.

Which was nice 🙂.
Have been trying to think of any British surnames that derive from places – there must be some, but I’m drawing a blank . All I can think of are ones that come from professions ( Thatcher, Brewer, Potter) or ‘son of .. .’
Any ideas ?

Have you explored the brewery in Barle Hertog yet?
No – what a great idea for a Sunday outing !!!! LIANNE…???????
Sorry but it is only open friday and Dat until 8.30!
Blackburn, Lincoln, Unthank, Kirkby, Mellor … looks a lovely cycle ride we did a bit of a tour round Baarle Nassau/Hertog last year.
Excellent work – but you could have taken a bit longer to produce that list – I feel daft now !
Now my brain is engaged, of course there are names like Bradford and Bolton too…. I was getting distracted by trying to think of one that had an ‘of’ or ‘from’ component like the Dutch ‘van’. Those only seem to work with the nobility ( Richard of York etc)
I have to say Mellor.
Or Morley, Overton, Matlock, Bakewell, etc. 😀👍 I hope you’re having a great trip! Cheers, Joe x
Ok, but apart from the whole of Derbyshire ( damn, that’s another one !) what other names have the Romans ever given us ? PS – welcome to the blog, Joe !
